Our CO:RE External Expert Advisory Board
It is our pleasure to welcome a fantastic group of people to our CO:RE External Expert Advisory Board (EEAB). We invited three senior members of key institutions and organisations in the domain of children and youth digital media use. They are experts in their fields covering families, policy and science journalism. In addition, we are pleased that we have also been able to gain an advisory board member for ethical questions particularly associated with the development of a knowledge base.
Additionally, we asked the project coordinators of three corresponding Research and Innovation Actions (RIA), which are also funded within the Horizon 2020 programme and run in parallel to CO:RE.
First, the ySKILLS project focuses on children’s and adolescents’ wellbeing in ever more digitised environments.
Second, the DigiGen project concentrates its work on developing robust knowledge on how children and young people, or the ‘digital generation’, use digital media and the ways technological transformations affect their everyday lives.
Last, but certainly not least, the DIGYMATEX project takes a psychological perspective on the positive and negative effects of digital information and communication technologies in the everyday lives of children and young people.

Who is who?
Leen d’Haenens is full professor at the KU Leuven and project coordinator of the RIA ySKILLS. Youth Skills (ySKILLS) investigates the new skill sets needed to benefit from evermore digitised environments and aims at enhancing and maximising the long-term positive impact of the digital environment.
Halla B. Holmarsdottir is vice dean at the Oslo Metropolitan University and project coordinator of the RIA DigiGen. DigiGen researchers investigate digital media use in educational institutions, the home, as a leisure activity and aim at coming to grips with children’s and young people’s digital citizenship.
Marco Hubert is an associate professor at the Aarhus University and project coordinator of the RIA DIGYMATEX. The DIGYMATEX project focuses on the development of the Digital Youth Maturity Index (DYMI), an evidence-based tool to assist in understanding and determining children’s digital maturity. Using the DYMI will help in predicting and explaining the benefits and risks associated with digital information and communication technologies.
Katharina Kinder-Kurlanda is a senior researcher and head of the Secure Data Center at the Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (GESIS), where she leads the Data Linkage and Data Security team. Aside from being on the EEAB, she also functions as the CO:RE Ethics Advisor.
Andrea Parola is a consultant based in Brussels and is currently project manager of the ICT Coalition for Children Online. The coalition aims at supporting children and youth across Europe to make the most of the online world and cope with challenges and risks.
Martin Schmalzried is a senior policy and advocacy manager at the European NGO COFACE Families Europe. COFACE’s work focuses on policies and legislation that impact the lives of families and children. Martin Schmalzried is mainly concerned with the fields of safer internet, financial services, advertising and public health at COFACE.
Volker Stollorz is a German science journalist and managing director of the Science Media Center Germany. The SMC has great competence in the preparation, classification and dissemination of evidence-based knowledge for journalists.
The first CO:RE EEAB Meeting took place in a virtual setting on May 8, and focused on how to best use synergies between the four EU-funded projects, amongst other topics.
We are more than grateful to have such a great support team and are looking forward to a fruitful collaboration over the next years!
